Quick Tip: When creating a team vision and goals, be real. Don’t choose some goal that you know is completely unattainable, as this demotivates the team. In the same vein, don’t choose a generic goal like “have fun.” This usually shows up as an afterthought, and many employees will not take it seriously.

The best way to characterize proper alignment is to realize that the team’s vision must support your people, goals must support the team’s vision, and projects, tasks, and assignments must support the team’s goals.

Finally, the team’s goals and vision must be REPEATED. Effective goal/vision attainment does not come just from spending time developing goals, but instead from taking action. STAR managers require accountability from their team to accomplish goals. The simplest way to keep goals and visions top-of-mind is to talk about them. For example, I would reference RIP during every team meeting and even during one-on-one coaching sessions with my employees. When we succeeded, I pointed out where the success to the R, I, or P categories was in our RIP mantra. When we fell short, I referenced which area needed to improve. Then, when a directive came down from my boss that required the team to change from business-as-usual, I related the change to how it supported our vision and goals. I brought my portable whiteboard to every single team meeting and would actually point to the applicable letter. Each year, I reviewed the team focus with my employees until they had all internalized it.

A manager’s responsibility for formulating goals and visions does not stop at the team level. STAR managers also know that it is their job to help their employees establish and work toward their own individual goals. Empowering your team to dream big and work hard to accomplish their goals will help you achieve team goals—when you make an effort to ensure your team goals are aligned with the goals of each individual on your team.
